Elephants Roam the Winterthorn Forest

In Southern Zambia, across the river from Zimbabwe lies Lower Zambezi National Park, over 4000 square kilometers of pristine, untouched wilderness, home to a vast ecosystem that supports dense populations of wildlife. Founded in 1983, this park remains free from mass tourism. At a time when so much of nature is impacted and encroached upon by humans, the isolated location of the Lower Zambezi Valley helps it remain truly wild and the landscape is like nowhere else on earth. The valley floor leads to the banks of the Zambezi river, and is bordered by the Zambezi Escarpment on the other side.

THE VAST WINTERTHORN FOREST

Evokes Fairytales and Enchantment

This region is known for its healthy elephant population, along with lions and leopards, painted dogs, impressive herds of buffalo, zebra and an abundance of antelope. The blue and gold light shimmering through the vast Winterthorn Forest evokes fairytales and enchantment, where woodland creatures frolic alongside elephants shaking snacks out of trees. The particularity of this unusual landscape makes it unsuitable for two of Africa’s iconic species: giraffe and wildebeest.

as they lift and settle in the sand, accompanied by the gentle cooing of turtle doves and calls of African Fish Eagles. When the sun sets, hyenas, civets, genets, honey badgers and the many other creatures of night make their way out under the cover of darkness, accompanied by hippos grazing in the light of the full moon.
